But it can be difficult to get all your ducks in a rowif its been awhile. Here are six things to keep in mind.Make three key updates your resume, website and LinkedIn profileWe get it, we get it You probably dont use behauptung everyday which is exactly why you should spend a good amount of time updating them before your event. It can be tough to update and fit your resume on one page, add to your website and round out your LinkedIn profile with all your new accomplishments, so give yourself all the time you need.Wrangle together your business cardsYou could argue that no one uses these anymore, but hey, its up to youIf your job provides business cards, youre going to want to pass a few out to the valuable new connections you make (or you could find the m on LinkedIn on the spot). But if your business cards are gathering dust in your desk drawer, you should dust them off or get new ones.Pick your event wardrobe wiselyYou know how you want to feel at the networking event, so if you often wear the same business clothes to gatherings like this, buy a few new pieces or accessories that will give you a fresh dose of confidence. You can also start writing down any burning questions you have for the featured guests.Reach out to panelists beforehandThis has worked for me before. So take a look at the featured speakers, and consider sending them aprofessional message via email or social media. Talk about how youre looking forward to hearing them speak. If they reply, you might just be able to use this tostrike up a conversation with them after their panel.Sometimes, reaching out beforehand can help you get your foot in the door early.Make your travel arrangementsIf you have to hop on a plane or a train to get to the event, youll want to book your round-trip tickets as early as you can.We all know that the longer you wait, the higher the price will be, and no one needs that - especially when there are other convention fees topay for. Make the Right Hiring Decisions for your Small Business

Make the Right Hiring Decisions for your Small BusinessMake the Right Hiring Decisions for your Small BusinessMake the Right Hiring Decisions for your Small Business ChildersYour small business may be growing by leaps and bounds. As you decide to add to your existing workforce, employment experts say its important to take steps to ensure you recruit and hire the right candidates.Small businesses need to be strategic when recruiting new hiresin order to avoid hiring pitfalls that can cost them time and money, says Mary Anne Kennedy, a human resources expert from Millstone Township, New Jersey, and author of Finding the Right Job A Step-by-Step Approach.I encourage small business owners to build a job descriptionaround the work that needs to be accomplished, and then look for candidates who offer that specific skilltischset.Since hiring employees you dont need can cripple a small business, consider the following before you post that job descriptionConsiderTiming. If you find your busin ess is missing growth opportunities because you and your employees are short-staffed or you cant keep up with customer needs, it may be time to hire. While a good manager knows when to pitch in, that doesnt mean doing the work of three people. After building a job description, small businesses should set the standards and expectations for the job, Kennedy says. Note what the specific tasks are, whats required to perform them and how the employees performance will be measured.Assess Workflows. Before hiring new employees, Margaret Jacoby, SPHR, president and principal consultant, MJ Management Solutions, Mesa, Arizona, also advises small business owners to assess their current workflow, and then to hire strategically. All too often a small business owner will feel as though they are overwhelmed and need to hire someone immediately, Jacoby says. Theres nothing worse than to hire someone for a poorly defined role. Before hiring, Jacoby recommends assessing your companys on-going business needs and what help you would require if your company suddenly experienced a growth spurt. Ask yourself what tasks could be taken on by existing staff, as well as areas where youd require additional assistance. Also, assess the stability of your business, customer base and budget, to determine if your company could retain new hires in the event of an economic downturn.Consider Outsourcing. Kennedy says filling a position isnt just about whom you hire, but how you structure the position. Outsourcing is often a good alternative to hiring a full-time staff member if you only occasionally need assistance or are seeking someone to work on a specific project.Hiring contractors and freelancers also allows small businesses to save money since they arent paying healthcare and vacation expenses.Recruiting IT workers is one area where small businesses often outsource. Instead of allocating resources to implement and maintain new IT systems, outsourcing allows small businesses to focus on critic al aspects of their business such as their products and customers.Know When to Keep Jobs In-House. Many small business owners have learned the hard way that no one sells their business as well as they do. If you want to grow your companys schlussverkauf base, consider whether sales is a job that you can take on yourself, and perhaps delegate some of your other tasks to another employee. If you do decide to hire an outside salesperson, Kennedy recommends hiring a candidate who is a hunter rather than a farmer.Farmers are content to maintain the status quo and to harvest existing customer business while hunters have a ferocious appetite and are aggressive about finding potential new customers and seeking out leads, Kennedy says.Identify Tasks to Help Grow Your Business. Jacoby advises small businesses to hire based on their future needs, rather than just their current needs. Where do you see your business in the next year, the next five years, and what kinds of employees do you need to reach those goals?

How to Write a Catchy Cover Letter

How to Write a Catchy Cover LetterHow to Write a Catchy Cover LetterHow to Write a Catchy Cover LetterHow to writer a cover letter that will leave the hiring manager intrigued to know more. TWEETThe cover letter is like an introduction. Think of it as a book cover or a movie ad it gives hints as to whats inside (or attached), like a teaser or preview. And while most applicant tracking systems (ATS) wont necessarily pay attention to cover letters, the letter will be attached to a resume that has successfully passed through an ATS and is considered for an interview. While ATSs look for certain elements in resumes to include them in an applicant pool, interviewers receive so many resumes that they look for reasons to discard. The cover letter gives the interviewer the first impression of a candidate. The cover letter is that important. Here is one example of a cover letter templateApplicantContact InformationNameCompanyAddressDear Name,I am pleased to submit my resume for Position with Or ganization. Given my background in (experience related to field) and (experience related to field), I feel I am in a great position to make significant contributions to Company.Throughout my entire career, I have demonstrated consistent success (something you have contributed to) to achieve high-reaching standards and goals. Salary Negotiation Scripts For Any Job

Salary Negotiation Scripts For Any Job Salary Negotiation Scripts For Any Job Ask any job seeker or employee about salary negotiations and one of the most popular responses is, “I would negotiate but I don’t know what to say.” Having the right words to say, or write, during a salary negotiation is vital. Communication can make or break discussions and impact your confidence to get paid fairly. First things first, determine your current worth in the job market.  Use Know Your Worth to receive a custom salary estimate based on your title, company, location and experience.  Once you have the information, it’s time to advocate for yourself. Josh Doody , author of Fearless Salary Negotiation ,   knows how challenging it can be to learn to financially advocate for oneself. He   took his first job without negotiating his salary.   Once he got hip to the dance, he doubled that salary. We teamed with Doody to equip job seekers and employees with exactly how to tackle tricky salary negotiation conversations. How should you respond when you’re asked about salary right off the bat? You want to demonstrate that you’re enthusiastic and cooperative, but you don’t want to tip your hand. Doody explains: “It’s a salary negotiation tactic disguised as a gatekeeper-type interview question.”     Recruiter: What’s your current salary? You: “I’m not really comfortable sharing that information. I would prefer to focus on the value I can add to this company and not what I’m paid at my current job.” If the interview team doesn’t know your salary, they can’t use it as their starting point. Doody writes, “that’s probably going to mean a higher initial offer for you.” Recruiter: What’s your expected salary? You: “I want this move to be a big step forward for me in terms of both responsibility and compensation.” Doody points out, “sharing your current salary or your expected salary is not in your best interest. . . They’re interviewing you because you’re a qualified candidate, and they need a qualified candidate. . . They would also like to get a good deal. . They’re not going to stop interviewing you just because you don’t make it easier for them to get a good deal on you.” If they pass because you won’t acquiesce, that’s a red flag . Doody says, “then they’re extremely motivated to get a bargain…That’s bad news for you even if you get the job.” One last thing, resist the temptation to tell a white lie when asked for your salary during the prescreening process.  If you underestimate what they’re willing to pay, you’re leaving money on the table. If the real answer is that they would compensate someone like you up to $75,000 dollars, and you guess they would pay a salary of only $65,000, you very literally may have just cost yourself $10,000. If you overestimate and tell them your salary expectation is $85,000, you may set off red flags that cause them to rethink the interview process altogether. This is pretty rare, but you could disqualify yourself by being “too expensive” for them. If your expected salary is well above their budgeted pay range, they may just move on to other candidates with lower salary expectations. The bottom line is you probably aren’t going to guess what their salary structure looks like, and if you try to guess you may cost yourself a lot of money. After you’ve secured an offer, Doody recommends using this formula: “The counter offer calculator accounts for four factors- the base salary of your job offer, your minimum acceptable salary (“walk away” number), how badly the company needs you to accept the job offer, and how badly you need the job.” Use “firm and neutral” language like this : “Tom offered $50,000 and I would be more comfortable if we could settle on $56,000. I feel that amount reflects the importance and expectations of the position for ACME Corp’s business, and my qualifications and experience as they relate to this particular position.” “Thank you so much for the offer. As I mentioned during my interview process, I am speaking with a couple of other companies. If you’re able to move the pay to [insert your number], I’d be eager to accept.” Doody explains that email is the perfect medium for this message. This way, the hiring manager can share it in a format that clearly makes your case to each person with whom it’s shared. Your case won’t get the same treatment if it’s restated recollections of a conversation.     The hiring manager will likely come back with a figure between your base salary and your counteroffer. For Doody, the distance between these figures represents your “salary negotiation window.” He recommends compartmentalizing this window into increments. In the example above, the window is $6,000, so he recommends devising a response for each possible offer. If, for example, the offer is $55,000 or above, Doody says it’s a taker.   “If the company comes back with $53,000, then you say ‘If you can do $54,000, I’m on board!’ If they stick with $53,000, then you would say, ‘I understand the best you can do is $53,000 and you can’t come up to $54,000. If you can do $53,000 and offer an extra week of paid vacation each year, then I’m on board. ’” Decide which benefits , like vacation  time  or flexible working hours, are most important so that you can apply them to bolster the deal. Rank those benefits in your mind and use those in your bargaining.   If they do not accept your second-priority benefit, you move on to your third-priority benefit. Regardless of whether they accept your final response, then you’re finished; don’t get nit-picky or greedy. You have maximized your base salary and maximized your benefits as well. Doody explains: “Your primary reason for requesting a raise is that the salary you’re being paid doesn’t reflect your current value to the company. That salary was set some time in the past, so your argument is that you are more valuable now than you were. . . ” You have a fair justification. Now you need the right plan . Start by mentioning, via email , to your manager that you’d like to discuss compensation in your next private meeting. After that conversation, Doodly advises preparing a strategically constructed, easily sharable salary increase letter . “As we discussed, it has been [amount of time] since [“my last significant salary adjustment” OR “since I was hired”] , and I would like to revisit my salary now that I’m contributing much more to the company. I’ve been researching salaries for [job title] in [industry] industry, and it looks like the mid-point is around [mid-point from your research] . So I would like to request a raise to [target salary] .” The letter should also highlight your accomplishments and accolades . Doody notes that if your proposal isn’t accepted on the first try, you can work with your manager to create an action plan. “I would love to work with you to put together a clear action plan and timeline so we can continue this discussion and monitor my progress as I work toward my goal.” Always remember, your talent is precious , and you deserve to be compensated for it. Learning to foster conversations about compensation is a vital skill that yields rewards.

Learn All About Alaska Fishing Jobs

Learn All About Alaska Fishing Jobs Learn All About Alaska Fishing Jobs I fished in Alaska from the time I was seventeen  until I was well into my forties,  and across all those years, one of the things that most impressed me is the way our Last Frontier continues to fire young  peoples imaginations. Just as it famously did during the Gold Rush, Alaska still lures the restless, the unorthodox, and the ambitious. The good news is that it still rewards them with amazing adventures, great financial opportunities, and lifelong friendships. Friendships forged through shared adventures and challenges well-met. I was fortunate enough to grow up in Seattle, Washington, the upper-left-hand corner of the United States. For me, Alaska was less  of  a  distant dream than it was for kids from Maine, Florida, Arizona, or Texas. Some of them still made it up there, of course, and I even met crew members from as far away as Wales and Israel during my time on Alaskan fishing boats,  but these were truly exceptional people; unorthodox in the extreme, you might say. Exceedingly restless. Getting to Alaska But what about recent high school graduates just looking for a start or college students who need to pay tuition and buy books to further their dreams? What about all those millions of people who watch Deadliest Catch on the Discovery Channel and suddenly feel the pull of the sea? A lot of them think about heading up to Alaska to work on a fishing boat, too. They have some vague concept of fantastic scenery and big money, but they dont have any idea how to proceed. If youre one of those people, how do you go about getting to Alaska and making some money? Well, you could do it the way I did. You could scrape together twenty-six bucks and hitchhike up through British Columbia, accepting rides from mobsters and religious zealots. Sleep under picnic tables. Catch a ferry to Southeast Alaska with ten cents left over. Walk the docks aimlessly, then eventually get hired on a fishing boat without even knowing what kind it is. You could do it that way, but I dont recommend it. Learn About Available Jobs Before You Head North What I do recommend is that you check the Internet to see if there is some way to connect with fishing boat captains before you head north. If you look in the right places, you can find realistic information about the work and the risks involved in commercial fishing, as well as the substantial rewards. The Alaska Job Center Network has detailed information on seafood harvesting jobs and the companies that hire for fishing industry positions. Jobs Working on a Fishing Boat So, what is it like to work on a fishing boat? Well, the first thing to understand is that Alaska has over 9,000 miles of coastline, and thousands of fishing vessels operate there, going after a wide variety of seafood and shellfish species. From 28-foot salmon trawlers that drag weighted lines and baited hooks in a low-tech fishery aimed at catching one beautiful fish at a time, to giant factory trawlers whose nets are big enough to swallow the Astrodome, to those crab boats made famous on the Discovery Channels Deadliest Catch program, theres no simple answer to the question of what life is like on a fishing boat. However, I can tell you about one of the most common entry-level gigs you can land in Alaska; a summer job on a salmon boat called a purse seiner (pronounced say-ner). It is the way I started out. The maximum length for purse seiners in Alaska is 58 feet. It is a state-mandated size limit meant to prevent excessive fish-catching efficiency among the fleet. Since the boats are relatively long and wide, they are usually quite comfortable. Purse seiners are readily distinguishable by their rigging. Purse seiners have a heavy mast, from which projects a boom, extending aft vertically and diagonally over the work deck. From the boom hangs the power block, a hydraulically  driven drum that retrieves the net from the water. Alaska Fishing Job Listings One of the best sources of fishing jobs in Alaska is the Alaska Job Center Network’s ALEXsys Job Bank. The site also has a list of job fairs, recruitment events, and workshops for job seekers. If youre in Alaska, you can visit a job center for assistance. Searching Google will bring up a variety of fishing and processing employment resources and job postings, including jobs on Indeed.com, jobs posted by employers, and job sites that focus on jobs in Alaska. While you’re reviewing jobs, be aware of the responsibilities of each crew member as outlined below, so you fully know what the job entails and what you’ll be doing if you’re hired to work on a fishing boat. Types of Available Jobs The Crew Purse seiners typically have a crew of five, including the captain. Everyone is expected to pitch in whenever and wherever there is work to be done, but certain specialized tasks usually, but not always, fall to  crew members  with prior experience. The  skiffman  drives a high-powered work skiff, which  pulls one end of the purse seiner net as it enters the water and corrals the catch. He works closely with  the captain, who communicates with him by radio about maintaining the shape of the net. (By the way, we use conventional masculine terminology for convenience and to avoid grammatical awkwardness. We also chose this  style because we have observed that a number of women who work in the fishing industry refer to themselves as fishermen, preferring the traditional term to the more politically  correct but less popular term, fishers. In any case, women comprise a growing percentage of the ranks of both  crew members  and skippers. We feel very strongly that the Alaskan commercial fishing industry is a better one because of these women, and we suspect that few in the fleets would disagree.) The engineer, usually a returning  crew member  or a greenhorn with mechanical experience, is responsible for keeping the engines and machinery in good working order. A greenhorn is a new and inexperienced crew  member. Always remember that every  crew member  and captain in Alaska was once a greenhorn. Greenhorns are usually assigned the role of a deckhand. Deckhands  do a little bit of  everything and are expected to display initiative and a willingness to learn at all times. Stacking the net as it comes aboard; repairing the nets and other equipment as they wear and tear; pitching fish into the fish-hold; unloading the catch at the end of the day; standing wheel-watch; and helping keep the boat clean are a few of the countless tasks that will be learned by the enterprising deckhand. Compared to jobs on crab boats or halibut boats, a workday onboard a salmon seiner is like a walk in the park. Depending on your previous experience, however, it may be the most demanding walk youve ever taken. The days are long. If fishery managers give the fleet a four-day opening, this means the fishery will be open for ninety-six hours straight. Your captain, unless he is very unusual, will always seek to maximize the  catch during openings. That means fishing from first light until dark. Making Sets On purse seiners, the greatest part of the workday is given to the repetitive process of making sets. (Set is the term given to the process of laying out and retrieving the net; a process that is repeated many times each day.) Most seining is done very close to shore, where schools of migrating fish appear in the greatest concentrations. While the crew checks the deck and equipment for readiness, the captain studies conditions of the  tide and current, light, the wind, and observable fish behavior to determine where he will make his set. At this point in the operation, the skiff is attached to the seiners stern, and the skiffman is at his steering station in the skiff, with the engine running in neutral. Arriving at his chosen spot, the captain signals the crew to release the skiff. Once released, and pulling one end of the net, the skiff turns and motors into position, usually facing and quite close to the rocky shoreline. The captain drives the seiner away from the skiff, and the quarter-mile-long net pays out over the stern. The Tow As the last of the net slides off the seiners stern, the captain slows the boat and begins to tow slowly against the current on his end, holding the net in a generally semicircular shape. Purse seiner nets are constructed in three main parts: a corkline along the top, strung with buoyant floats called “corks”; the webbing (also called the “mesh”) of the net itself below the corkline; and a heavy leadline (a thick nylon line with chunks of lead woven into it) at the bottom. The corkline  floats on the surface of the water, the web hangs down in the water like a fence, and the weighted leadline keeps the fence hanging more or less straight down in the water. The tow lasts about twenty minutes, during which time the crew throws any fish remaining on deck into the hold and hoses down the work area to clear it of seaweed and jellyfish. There are usually a few minutes to relax and grab a sandwich or cup of coffee  below  deck during tows. During the tow, the captain and skiffman are holding the net open, so fish can swim into it. At the end of the tow, the captain tells the skiffman, by radio, to close-up. Hearing this, the deckhands and the cook scramble back into their rain gear and gloves so they can haul gear. Closing the Net The skiffman closes the circle of the net by driving alongside the seiner and handing off his end of the net to the deck crew. He then drives out under the towline attached to the seiner. Circling to the other side of the seiner, he attaches another towline to the big boat, which he will pull on with the skiff to hold the seiner in proper relation to the net as it comes back aboard. When the net is closed up, it hangs like a big circular corral in the water. The fish that swam into the net during the tow are now caught, but they can still escape by diving, since the bottom of the net is floating, not resting on the bottom. To prevent their escape, the crew purses the  net closed, using a large winch mounted on the seiners deck. Visualize a long drawstring closing the bottom of a giant mesh bag. Thats what pursing is. Once underway, it is time for the net to come aboard. The power block does the heavy lifting in a seiner operation, pulling the net out of the water and over the deck. After the net passes through the power block, it is lowered toward the work deck, where two or three crew members stack it in a pile. The Fish The fish come aboard in the last part of the net and are emptied either onto the deck or directly into the hold. Hauling gear takes about 15 minutes for most seiners today. An efficient crew on a well-equipped purse seiner can complete 15 to 18 sets per day. So, that gives you a glimpse of what it’s like to live and work on a fishing boat in Alaska. It’s not for everyone, and I am biased, but I think it’s the greatest summer job in the world. Making Luck in Alaska Its been about thirty years since I first went north, and Im glad I did. After that rocky start, my dreams of beautiful country and good money came true every season I spent there, from Ketchikan to Nikolski, from Naknek to Dutch Harbor. It’s a profoundly beautiful place, Alaska, and it’s still the purest, closest thing we have in this country to a “land of opportunity.” Most importantly, it’s still big enough for a lot of dreams. Maybe yours. Someone once said that “luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” So, find yourself an online resource that can provide both of those things, and you’ll have a good shot at making your own kind of luck in Alaska. And always â€" as I used to tell my crew at the start of every season â€" be smart, be safe, and good luck!

First-Time Job Seeker Knock Em#8217; Dead with Author Martin Yate

First-Time Job Seeker Knock Em#8217; Dead with Author Martin Yate First-Time Job Seeker Knock Em#8217; Dead with Author Martin Yate But I’d worked hard for that position. After applying, I called the store’s hiring manager every month only to be told “sorry, we don’t have anything available at this time.” But I was persistent until one day, a position became available. And although I didn’t realize it as a teen, years later, that characteristic would play a significant role in securing my future job in the “real world.” Searching for the first job- we’ve all been there before. And many recent and future graduates will soon find themselves in this common phase. But what are students to do when they don’t know to “call until something becomes available?” What can those do who haven’t learned the necessary job seeking skills, like persistence, networking, research and ‘resume perfecting’? Well, Martin Yate has an answer (and a book) for that. Yate is the New York Times bestselling author of the “Knock Em’ Dead” series- a variation of books designed to guide you through a successful job search and modern career management.  His latest addition, “Knock Em Dead - Job Search Strategies for First-Time Job Seekers: How to Manage Your Career, Find the Right Job, and Excel in the Workplace,” offers a “how to” specifically for first time job seekers. Recruiter.com had the opportunity to chat with Yate about his new book (the ebook is currently available on Amazon for $1.99!). See what advice, tips and tricks he offered for those hoping to land their first jobs: 1. What led you to add a book specifically on first-time job seekers to your “Knock ‘Em Dead” series? I see the career management and job search advice young grads are getting at school and college and it is out of date and entirely inadequate. My wife and I have seven young adult children between us (ranging from a Berkeley grad with double degrees to one struggling with a GED), and we see this complete inadequacy first hand. The world of work that this generation is entering is entirely without security, and I saw that a new approach to job search that also embraced the issues of financial survival and long-term career management issues was way overdue. 2. What are some of the most common mistakes first-time job seekers make? a) That a job somehow comes as a “right” with graduation b) That there will always be someone there to pick up the pieces and kiss the boo-boos better c) That crossing the final bridge into adulthood means that graduate is on his or her own and what happens in life is up to his or her efforts d) The corporate world doesn’t care what you want; it is about you being able to deliver what they want. e). There is no going back, you get one chance at life and this is it. Today there is less security but more opportunity than ever before. Invest in your future and you can get what you want out of life and live it on your own terms. Get serious about managing the trajectory of your professional life; learn what it takes to become successful and what you will have to do to make it happen. 3. In your book you ask, “Should you follow your bliss?” How should first-time job seekers use their passions when job hunting? I raise the question, “Should you follow your bliss?” but I do not say anyone should “follow their bliss,” or anything like it. I believe such advice to be naïve, impractical and usually hurtful advice to give a young person. Instead, I discuss the different ways you can make a successful professional life happen: through a traditional professional career, as an entrepreneur and by the pursuit of your dreams. I then lay out a proven way to integrate the pursuit of any (or all) vehicles for success into an overall plan of attack for getting what you want out of life. Martin Yate 4. You tell readers the sooner they start working toward their goals the better. Why is this especially true for college students set to graduate? Competition is fierce, getting a fast start out of college means getting a fast start on your career. Get a job quickly after graduation, and while many in our class are still struggling a year from now, you have a year of real-world experience- and  in another 12-24 months you’ll be ready to make your first move and start climbing the promotional and financial ladder   of success. 5. What are a few do’s and don’t’s when constructing entry-level resumes? - Always have a target job title; it gives you and the reader focus - (Targeted job titles) help make your resume discoverable in databases. - Focus on the skills you bring to this specific job and go after that job. Don’t expect busy HR professionals to waste time thinking up great jobs for you. It’s all up to you. - Include a “Professional Skills” section that identifies all the hard skills you posses that are relevant to the job. - In the “Professional Experience” section, repeat these skills in the context they were applied and developed. 6. What is one of the biggest misconceptions people have about their first jobs? How can they change this? That they can start at the top. You have no experience to offer; you just have youth and education and enthusiasm. You will get an entry-level job and the pay might not be that great. Don’t worry, a career covers a 50-year time span. This is a marathon and not a sprint. A first job is all about getting your foot in the door and getting as much experience as you can for two or three years while you make as many professional contacts as you can. Then plan and execute your first upward strategic career move. 7. Final thoughts? If you want to live life on your terms and become a success in an uncertain world, be prepared to 1) start low down the totem pole (spring break is over and life is NOT a Budweiser commercial) and 2) work your butt off for a few years while you really learn a trade/profession, simultaneously using that job as entrepreneurial on-the-job-training for the pursuit of your own dream and entrepreneurial careers. At 15, I wanted to be a writer. By the time I was 34, I’d become director of training at a publicly traded company. When I was 35, my first book was published, launching my entrepreneurial career. Secrets Strategies For First Time Job Seekers is my 16th book and I’ve been my own boss, making my own hours for 28 years. A better example? Harrison Ford- the biggest box office star in history- was  a finish carpenter in L.A. for years before he became the movie star we all know.

Why you shouldnt lie on your resume, and how many do anyway

Why you shouldn't lie on your resume, and how many do anyway Why you shouldn't lie on your resume, and how many do anyway According to new research,  1 in 10 people surveyed have lied or embellished the truth on their resume, cover letter, or LinkedIn profile  to help them get a job at a different company.Yet if job seekers or workers get caught lying about their professional credentials, it can result in serious consequences, including being fired from a job or not hired for an opportunity.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! The  2019 research findings from Blind  were based on responses from more than 10,000 people from 17 different companies. The survey focused on workers in the technology industry, and resulted in over 1,000 respondents from various tech firms including Amazon, Facebook, Uber, Google, and Microsoft stating that the following statement was true:I have embellished or lied on my LinkedIn or resume/CV to help land another job.SAP, Amazon, Cisco, and PayPal topped the list of compan ies that had the most employees who admitted to this type of career-related lying (at 12.5%, 11.57%, and 10.78% of employees, respectively). Salesforce had the fewest employees who said that they lied on their resume or LinkedIn, at just 2.83%.According to Blind,  when people lie on their resume, it’s often related to their age, academic degrees, technical abilities, or even their criminal records. Interview situations seem to generate a different set of lies about the job candidate’s references, previous salaries, and full work history. This isn’t the first study that has documented a percentage of the job search population as lying- and it isn’t just a tech industry phenomenon. In 2017, HireRight published an employment screening benchmark report that found a surprising  85% of employers caught job applicants in the act of lying  on their job applications or resumes- an increase from 66% in the five years prior. In an article from  Inc., J.T. O’Donnell speculated on  reason s why job seekers might feel compelled to lie  even during times when unemployment rates are low, noting that applicant tracking systems- in which applicants must enter their details in a very specific format on the company’s website- may be part of what’s behind the increasing trend. “Job seekers have gotten wise to the finicky nature of the technology and are lying on their resumes and applications in hopes of making the cut,” O’Donnell wrote.Regardless of how compelling your reason might be to stretch the truth during the application process,  it’s not wise to fib to a potential employer  about your background and/or credentials. While you may think that you’re getting away with your story in the short-term, employers have multiple ways at getting at the truth, which include (as O’Donnell points out): Online background checks, which employers can purchase to confirm everything from past employers for whom you’ve worked, to your salary history and criminal records. Calling people, not on your reference list.  While most employers will request that you  provide a list of professional and/or personal references  to validate your performance and character, not all recruiters or managers will stick to your list. As O’Donnell explains: “Some recruiters research and secretly contact ex-colleagues of a candidate to inquire about his or her performance. Their goal is to speak to someone NOT recommended to them by the candidate, since most references have been coached to say only good things.” Interview grilling.  Using interview techniques such as behavioral interviewing, hiring teams may try to throw you off by drilling down into questions that require extensive detail of past experiences to answer. If you falter or can’t justify the claimed experiences with concrete examples, then the gig is up.As you can see,  lying during the hiring process  is a risky business. If you’re caught in the act, it goes without saying that you won’t get the job that you want. Worse yet, your failure to tell the truth could affect your professional credibility with other employers and recruiters as well, since they may network and share their experiences. So instead of making something up on your resume, job application, LinkedIn profile, or during an interview, just do the right thing: come clean about your work history and background to have the best chance of getting that offer. Quiet as an Owl

Quiet as an Owl Quiet as an Owl Quiet as an Owl Owls, particularly barn owls, are alone among birds in being almost completely silent in both gliding and flapping flight. From an engineers perspective, the owls silent flight shouldnt be possible, says William Devenport, a professor of aerospace and ocean engineering at Virginia Tech. Because, if you look at the owl wing, its covered in edges, and each of those edges should radiate noise. Figuring out how owls wings allow for soundless flight could help engineers quiet jet engines, airplane wings, drones, wind turbines, and even home appliances like hair dryers. Iowa State and Virginia Tech researchers are working together on owl wing studies to determine just what makes the owls flight soundless. To learn exactly how owls wings manipulate air flow, turbulence and pressure to produce silent flight, Anupam Sharma, an Iowa State University assistant professor of aerospace engineering, is scanning owl wings, creating digital models and running simulations that often take days to complete. Three features of the owl wings come together to allow the birds to flap and glide with such quiet stealth: a soft, pliable, comb-like structure at the leading edge of the wing; feathers at the trailing edge of the wing that end in a pliable and porous fringe, also with the comb-like structure; and a downy coat of hairs that form a canopy on the flight feathers. Anupam Sharma and his research team are studying the wings of Barn Owls for breakthroughs that could lead to silent flight. Image: Iowa State University So far, Sharma and his team have been investigating the first two features to determine how they affect noise. The team has done numerical simulation to investigate every part of the flow field over the front end of the wing to understand whats going on in time and space. Those simulations showed that, far from increasing unsteady pressure, the wings leading edge reduces unsteady pressure in the airflow over the wing. Noise produced during flight is proportional to unsteady pressure, he says. The leading [edge] is not straight, its jagged to reduce unsteady lift at leading edge, which is somewhat akin to how supersonic flight uses a delta [triangle-shaped] wing, Sharma says. To understand that, think of air turbulence as blobs of cohesive structures. One blob will hit one portion of the wing and the jagged structure breaks it apart, breaks it off up from the rest of the blobs, he says. This breaks up the pressure of the airflow, and the noise it causes. Sharmas team is working with Virginia Tech researchers to understand the role the hairs on the wings play in quieting noise. The hairs initially rise almost perpendicular to the feather surface but then bend over in the flow direction to form the canopy with interlocking barbs at the their tops. The hairs aid in reducing trailing noise. When a blade like the ones on a wind turbine slices through the air, the sharp edge at the back of the blade converts the airs turbulence into sound waves, Sharma says. Virginia Tech researchers found the canopy of the owl wings surface pushes off the noisy flow. The impact of hairs and the canopy is to take the blobs and move them away from the wings surface; then, the noise production mechanism weakens, he says. Unsteady pressure depends how close turbulence is to surface and trailing edge; you want to get the eddies to be moved away from the trailing edge. After Virginia Tech researchers simulated and optimized the canopy structure, they created a 3D-printed, plastic attachment consisting of small finlets that can be attached to blades, such as those within airplane engines or the rotating blades of wind turbines. The finlet invention may be retrofitted to an existing blade and wing designs and used in conjunction with other noise-reduction strategies to achieve even greater noise suppression, Sharma says. The add-ones could be useful in wind turbines, he says. They seem silent, but even the small amount of noise they make in quiet surroundings becomes source of annoyance. Local laws make it difficult for manufacturer to place turbines unless they have means to reduce noise, Sharma adds. Researchers continue to study the back part of the owl wings to find even more methods to quiet all types of fan blades and airplane wings. Just imagine, one day youll be watching a plane land and may not even hear the jet engine. Or youll hike through an area with wind turbines and not hear that eerie hum. Thats something that might be worth listening for. Jean Thilmany is an independent writer. For Further Discussion From an engineers perspective, the owls silent flight shouldnt be possible. Because, if you look at the owl wing, its covered in edges, and each of those edges should radiate noise. Prof. William Devenport, Virginia Tech.

Having baby between 25-35 makes pay gap impossible to close

Having baby between 25-35 makes pay gap impossible to close Having baby between 25-35 makes pay gap impossible to close When you’re a woman planning a family, timing what age you decide to have a baby will have far-reaching consequences on your future earnings. Think carefully. There is a 10-year baby window that will put women in a pay gap from which they will never recover. This is a sobering calculation the New York Times found when they crunched the numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau on how the difference between a male-female couple’s earnings will widen after a first child is born.Having a baby between 25-35 costs working womenThe time between age 25 and 35 are prime professional years, where networks get built and careers get established. They are also the years where many couples decide to have children.  This is a choice that penalizes women, but not their male partners. When women decided to have their first child during that 10-year window, their salaries never bounced back. Meanwhile, women who chose to have a child before age 25 and after age 35 eventually close the gap. On average, w omen earned $12,600 less than their male partners before children were born and watched that number double to $25,100 less after a child was born.“The transition to parenthood leads to a sharp and persistent increase in the gap between the earning of male and female spouses, driven by a decrease in the earnings of the female spouse,” the U.S. Census Bureau concluded. Why were the other women able to overcome the gap? The Times suspected that it was because the gap was not as large to overcome for younger and older working mothers. Younger mothers were more likely to have lower salaries in general, and older mothers were only juggling the pay setback of one child.“Low earners have a smaller pay gap in general, and people who have babies in their late 30s could have a smaller pay gap because they are less likely to have more than one child,” the Times wrote.Subsidized childcare would change thisWith each child, the pay gap grows. Since the 1980s, childless women have been out-e arning working mothers.Economists have calculated that women with one child today will experience a 15% pay gap compared to childless women, while mothers with two kids will take a 13% pay gap hit, and mothers with three or more children will be making 20% less than childless women. To soften the blow of the motherhood penalty, women would need to gain back the time lost to taking care of their families. Taking care of children is expensive. The national average cost of childcare is almost $8,700 a year.Enter subsidized childcare. When you do not have to be home at all hours taking care of your child, you have more flexibility to be working.“It’s really, really, really clear,” sociologist Joya Misra, who co-authored the pay gap study for women with multiple children, said. “Universal subsidized childcare has the most important effect on reducing the motherhood penalty.”
